HYA: Gun Violence Prevention

Houston Youth Walkout

On April 20th, 2018, Houston students walked out of their classes and marched to demand action on gun control nationwide. We believe that after almost two decades with little to no progress, enough is enough.

On November 6th, 2018, young Houstonians and the United States voted in numbers never seen before to elect candidates that support the safe, healthy, and financially sound future that we all deserve.

We advocated for common-sense gun reform policies such as universal background checks, a ban on assault weaponry and bump stocks, preventing domestic abusers from obtaining a license, and magazine limits. Our mission did not condone in any way the mass confiscation of weapons from responsible citizens.

Finances

HYA is a group of students that prides itself on being a model for other youth groups and have an obligation to maintain complete financial transparency. This expense report and its summary  has all the financial information for this event. For any questions regarding expense please contact us.

Schedule of Events

We offered two different events for April 20th. The first one was our City Hall Rally where we had students march from Wiley Park to City Hall. Our other option was the In-School Walkout for those who wished to stay in school but stand in solidarity.

CITY HALL WALKOUT AND RALLY:
9:00 - 10:15
………... Students walk out of school and meet at Wiley Park (1601 Ruthven St, Houston, TX 77019) behind Carnegie Vanguard High School. While waiting for other schools to arrive, markers, poster board, etc. will be provided for students to make posters.

10:20 - 11:00………. Students march from Wiley Park to City Hall (901 Bagby St, Houston, TX 77002) along West Dallas Street.
11:00 - 1:00………... Speakers, including students, teachers and local officials, speak at City Hall.
1:00 - 1:17…………. Our ceremony at City Hall will come to a close, but this will not be the end. We will continue to advocate for smarter gun laws and safer schools until our goal is met. For students who can't walk out to City Hall, schools will have a 17 minutes of actionable silence to honor the victims of Parkland and use this time to email our state representatives and pressure them to sponsor responsible gun reform laws.
1:30 - 2:00…………. Students leave the event.

why was the walkout on april 20th?
April 20th is the nineteen-year anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting in Colorado. Furthermore, it has been nationally recognized as the day for students to walk out all across the country.
Aren't the schools going to lose funding because of attendance?
We encouraged students to walk out after the ADA (Average Daily Attendance) time for their school. Funding is determined based on attendance taken at this time, so schools still received funding for students that participate in the walkout. However, we recognized that some schools will have to miss ADA in order to attend the rally at City Hall. If this was an issue, we encouraged students to walkout to a designated area at 12 PM to take part in a 17-minute period of silence.
