Houston Climate Strike

Houston, Texas — On Friday, September 20th, 2019, young people in Houston, Texas will go on strike from school to protest the government’s failure to take action to stop climate change. We are joining hundreds of thousands of other young people holding strikes across the world to demand change.
Political leaders in Texas and around the world have failed to prioritize — and in some cases even acknowledge — climate change. Their delay has brought about a climate crisis: According to the UN, there are only 11 years left to reverse the worst effects of climate change. Our futures are on the line, and we will demand attention for climate change before it’s too late. Three days before the UN Climate Summit, we are joining a global movement to demand legislative action and mitigate the effects of climate change.
Students from over 20 Houston-area high schools will strike from school and congregate at city hall, joining with the rest of our generation across the globe in our loud cry for climate action. We make the following demand: Enact radical legislation to combat climate change on local and state levels in Texas; pursue comprehensive climate federally—starting today.
WHERE: Houston City Hall
WHO: Climate Activists, Students, Partners, Organizations, Community Leaders
WHEN: 12pm on Friday, Sept. 20th, 2019
RSVP
This event is in coalition with the Sunrise Movement, 350 org, Climate Strike Texas, Zero Hour, Friday’s for Future, Houston Youth Activists, and March for Our Lives Houston.

Schedule:
10:15 AM - 11:20 AM..................................................Students will walkout of their schools (Please check with coordinator for what time)
11:00 AM - 11:30 AM..................................................Students will meet at either Carnegie Vanguard HS or HSPVA
11:30 AM - 12:00 PM.................................................Students will march to city hall
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM.................................................Rally (subject to change, possibly ending earlier)
Background:
Beginning when 16-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg’s weekly strikes at the Swedish Parliament last year, the school strike for climate action movement has developed into a vastly popular and galvanizing international phenomenon. The success of our movement is visible across the globe: politicians at various levels nationally and internationally are finally beginning to talk about the climate crisis and the necessary solutions. But climate action is still slow moving; in order to successfully ensure that, through international cooperation and local initiatives like Houston’s Climate Action Plan, humans reduce emissions by 45% by 2030 and limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, we must keep striking.
Please be sure to check in with your school coordinator for transportation!
